Turdus

Bird Genera

Turdus is a genus of birds, family Turdidae, the largest genus in the wider thrush family, comprising 105 extant species, two of them recently extinct, with a cosmopolitan distribution across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas; several species have colonized oceanic islands, and two European species were introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Most species measure 22 to 28 centimeters, with the smallest around 17 to 19 centimeters and the largest 28 to 33 centimeters, all with slender, medium-length bills and highly variable plumage, though recently fledged juveniles are consistently spotted on the breast and streaked on the back. All are omnivorous, eating invertebrates, fruit and small seeds; northern temperate species are migratory while tropical and subtropical species are generally not, and many are noted for melodious song and for adapting readily to gardens and other human-altered habitats, with familiar members known regionally as thrushes, blackbirds, robins, fieldfares and redwings.
