Gymnogyps is a genus of New World vultures in the family Cathartidae containing five known species, one living and four extinct. The sole living species is the California condor; its extinct relatives include the larger Gymnogyps amplus, found at the La Brea Tar Pits in California and radiocarbon dated to roughly 9,000 years ago, along with species known from Peru, Florida and Cuba, indicating the genus was once far more widespread than the severely restricted range of the surviving California condor today.
