Cathartiformes is a former order of scavenging birds that included the living New World vultures and the extinct Teratornithidae, distinguished from many Old World vultures by feet and talons unsuited to seizing live prey. New World vultures were once thought closest to storks, but genetic analysis has instead linked them to the Accipitriformes, and most current classifications place the family Cathartidae inside that order rather than keeping Cathartiformes separate.
