Waterbird Orders is a Browse By group of the Nature Atlas that gathers the bird orders whose members live on or beside water, such as the pelicans, herons and ibises, the loons, the grebes, the storks and the petrels and albatrosses of the open ocean. An entry belongs here when its own cited article describes the order as waterbirds, aquatic birds, aquatic diving birds, wading birds or seabirds. It excludes the ducks and geese, which have their own group, and orders of land birds. Waterbirds feed on fish and other aquatic animals and have bodies shaped for swimming, diving or wading, so the group collects the branches of the bird family tree that returned to the water.
