Gorgeted Sunangel

The gorgeted sunangel, Heliangelus strophianus, is a monotypic hummingbird in the family Trochilidae, measuring 10 to 11 centimeters and weighing about 5.3 grams. Both sexes show dark, velvety green upperparts and a steel-blue tail; males have a glittering rose-to-violet throat gorget with a white pectoral band and a small green frontlet, while females are duller, with dark gray-brown chins and white-fringed feathers. The species is found in southwestern Colombia's Narino department and discontinuously through western Ecuador, favoring humid to wet premontane forest in ravines and shrubby forest edges between about 1,200 and 2,800 meters elevation, becoming uncommon toward the higher end of that range.
