Canadian Boreal Forest

Boreal Forest and Taiga

Canada's boreal forest makes up about one third of the circumpolar boreal forest ringing the Northern Hemisphere, covering almost 60 percent of Canada's land area, mostly north of the 50th parallel. Estimates for its undisturbed extent run to roughly three million square kilometers, with the Boreal Shield alone, its largest ecozone, covering 1.63 million square kilometers. Researchers remain uncertain how large a net carbon source rising temperatures and disturbance will make the forest over the coming century. Open Question: Canadian Boreal Forest

The Canadian boreal forest's own Wikipedia entry states that increasing temperatures and disturbance rates will make the forest a net carbon source for more than a hundred years, and that this will have global impacts researchers are still uncertain about.

What would resolve this Long-term carbon-flux monitoring across the boreal forest's major disturbance regimes, combined with climate modeling of the resulting global feedback.
