Hylocomium splendens, commonly called glittering woodmoss, splendid feather moss, stairstep moss, or mountain fern moss, is a perennial clonal moss found across Northern Hemisphere boreal forests, including Europe, Russia, Alaska and Canada, where it is often the most abundant moss species. It also grows in Arctic tundra and at higher elevations further south, including northern California, western Sichuan, East Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies. In Scotland it is a characteristic species of the Caledonian Forest, and the United Kingdom's national vegetation classification names an entire pinewood community type after its pairing with Scots pine.
