Alerce, also called Patagonian cypress or lawal, is a tall, long-lived conifer and the sole species in the monotypic genus Fitzroya within the cypress family Cupressaceae. It grows in the Andes mountains and coastal regions of southern Chile and the Argentine Andes, where it forms an important part of the Valdivian temperate forests; the genus was named in honor of Robert FitzRoy.
