Italian cypress, Cupressus sempervirens, is a conifer of the family Cupressaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean, long cultivated so widely across the region that its exact original range is uncertain. Its narrow, columnar form, most familiar in its cultivated fastigiate variety, has made it an iconic feature of Tuscan and other Mediterranean landscapes for millennia, and its durable, fine-grained wood was historically prized for doors, chests and coffins, including some attributed to ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean use.
