Papuacedrus

Papuacedrus papuana is a species of conifer in the family Cupressaceae, and the sole living species in the genus Papuacedrus, though some botanists classify it instead within the related genus Libocedrus. It is native to New Guinea and Indonesia's Maluku province, growing as a medium-sized to large evergreen tree 16 to 50 meters tall, though at high elevations it is reduced to a shrub up to 3 meters. Its foliage grows in flat sprays of scale-like leaves in opposite pairs, and its cones are 1 to 2 centimeters long with four scales bearing winged seeds. A fossil species, Papuacedrus prechilensis, is also known from the Eocene of Argentina. The living species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
