Paris quadrifolia, known as herb Paris or true lover's knot, is a perennial flowering plant in the family Melanthiaceae, found across temperate and cool Eurasia from Spain to Yakutia and from Iceland to Mongolia, favoring calcareous soils in damp, shady woodland and stream banks. It grows 25 to 40 centimeters tall, usually with four leaves in opposing pairs, though three to eight may occur, and flowers from June to July with a solitary bloom of four narrow greenish petals, eight golden-yellow stamens and a purple to red ovary. It produces at most one blueberry-like berry containing around 33.6 seeds; the berry and other tissues contain the toxic compound solanine, though poisonings are rare because of the fruit's repulsive taste. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern, though it is declining in parts of Europe from habitat loss.
