Fungi

Boletus edulis, known in English as cep, penny bun or porcino, is a basidiomycete fungus and the type species of the genus Boletus, prized as an edible mushroom. It produces spore-bearing fruit bodies above ground in summer and autumn, with a large brown cap that can reach 30 centimetres in diameter and 3 kilograms in weight, tubes rather than gills extending downward from the underside of the cap, and a stout white or yellowish stem up to 25 centimetres tall partially covered with a raised network pattern. It grows in deciduous and coniferous forests and tree plantations, forming symbiotic ectomycorrhizal associations with living trees, and is widely distributed across Eurasia and North America in the Northern Hemisphere, not occurring naturally in the Southern Hemisphere but introduced there.
