Common dentex

Fish

The common dentex, scientific name Dentex dentex, is a marine ray-finned fish in the seabream family Sparidae, found in the northeastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay to Ras Nouadhibou in Mauritania, around the Canary Islands and Madeira, and throughout the Mediterranean Sea into the western Black Sea. It is a benthopelagic species living down to 200 meters, most common between 15 and 50 meters over rocky, inshore substrates. Its body is oval and compressed with a smoothly rounded dorsal profile in adults, and it carries prominent canine-like teeth in multiple rows. Juveniles are greyish with black spots on the back and upper flanks, becoming pink and then bluish-grey with age, and the species can reach about 100 centimeters, though 50 centimeters is more typical, with a maximum recorded weight of 14.3 kilograms.
