One of the largest and most diverse orders of ray-finned fish, historically used as a broad catch-all for spiny-finned fishes, including perch, bass, cichlids and a great many reef fish; recent classification has begun splitting the traditional order into narrower groups, though it remains widely used as a reference grouping.
