The ray-finned fishes: bony fish whose fins are supported by thin, bony rays radiating from the body rather than a fleshy lobe. Actinopterygii is overwhelmingly the largest class of fish and, indeed, of all living vertebrates, accounting for roughly half of all described vertebrate species.
