Coenobita pseudorugosus

Coenobita pseudorugosus is a species of terrestrial hermit crab first identified in 1988 that closely resembles the more common Coenobita rugosus, with a shield length of 5 to 30 millimeters and a body weight between 100 milligrams and about 25 grams, colored light to dark or reddish brown, pink, or blue grey. Its larger left claw has an irregular pentagonal shape with a straight outer edge and an angled inner edge, unlike the rounded, more quadrangular claw of Coenobita rugosus. It was first described on Cebu Island in the Philippines and has since been studied in southwest Madagascar, Sumatra, and central Sulawesi in Indonesia, where it lives in the supralittoral zone, favors short to medium spired shells, is mostly active from dusk to after dawn, and can migrate up to 100 meters a day to forage and find shells, sheltering in fallen leaves, mangrove roots, or rock crevices.
