The Amargosa River pupfish is a member of a pupfish species complex inhabiting the watershed of ancient Lake Manly. It currently occupies two disjunct perennial reaches of the lower Amargosa River, an upstream portion near Tecopa that passes through the Amargosa Canyon and a lower portion northwest of Saratoga Springs at the head of Death Valley, where the river turns north to enter the valley. It is typically found in warm, shallow water with submerged vegetation.
