The Gaboon viper is a large, heavy-bodied venomous snake native to the rainforests and savanna woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, widely regarded as the heaviest viper species in the world and holder of the longest fangs of any venomous snake, which can exceed five centimetres. Its intricate geometric pattern of brown, purple, tan and black shapes provides remarkably effective camouflage against the leaf litter of the forest floor, where it lies motionless for long periods waiting to ambush passing prey such as rodents, birds and small mammals. Despite its potent venom and imposing size, the Gaboon viper has a notably placid and slow-moving temperament, rarely striking unless directly provoked or stepped on, and bites to humans are relatively uncommon given how well the species is camouflaged. When it does strike, it can deliver an exceptionally large volume of venom in a single bite, capable of causing severe local tissue damage as well as significant systemic effects, making prompt antivenom treatment important. It remains fairly widespread across its range and is not currently considered globally threatened, though local populations face pressure from deforestation.
