Thrips

Insects

Thrips, commonly known as thunderflies or thunderbugs, are minute, slender insects of the order Thysanoptera with fringed wings and unique asymmetrical mouthparts. Entomologists have described approximately 7,700 species, distributed globally alongside the food plants many of them feed on. Their feathery wings are unsuitable for conventional flight, so thrips instead exploit an unusual clap-and-fling mechanism, generating lift through an unsteady circulation pattern with transient vortices near the wings.
