Home›Ferns and Fern Allies›Everyday Group›WaterfowlGroupWaterfowlThis group gathers Birds subcategory members belonging to the order Anseriformes, the ducks, geese and swans, defined by webbed feet suited to swimming and a broad, often flattened bill used to filter or graze food from water and soft mud. It spans the true geese and swans, generally larger, long-necked grazers of grass and aquatic vegetation that pair for life, and the far more numerous and varied true ducks, among them dabbling ducks that feed at the water's surface or tip forward to reach just below it, diving ducks that submerge fully in search of food, and the seaducks such as the eiders and scoters, which spend much of the year on open coastal water. Many waterfowl species undertake long seasonal migrations between separate breeding and wintering grounds, and several, including the mallard and the greylag goose, are the wild ancestors of familiar domesticated duck and goose breeds.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll WaterfowlWaterfowl20 entriesWaterfowlFilter Results20 entriesCommon GroupAllWaterfowl (20)TaxonomyAllAnas (2)Anatidae (13)Anser (1)Anseriformes (3)HabitatAllEstuary (1)Lake (1)Steppe (1)Tundra (2)Wetlands (4)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Least Concern (16)Near Threatened (1)Vulnerable (2)EcosystemAllPrairie Pothole Region (1)DietAllHerbivore (13)Insectivore (5)Omnivore (2)Population TrendAllStable (1)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (13)Marine (9)Marine and Freshwater (1)Terrestrial (13)Terrestrial and Marine (2)ThreatsAllBiological Resource Use (1)Pollution (1)Relationship to PeopleAllDomesticated (1)Hunted or Fished (1)Invasive or Introduced Species (4)Living or ExtinctAllYes (20)Where It LivesAllAfghanistan (6)Africa (8)Albania (5)Algeria (3)Andorra (2)Antigua and Barbuda (1)Argentina (5)Armenia (6)Australasia (1)Australia (11)Austria (11)Azerbaijan (5)Bahamas (4)Bahrain (5)Bangladesh (3)Barbados (5)Belarus (10)Belgium (20)Belize (2)Benin (2)Bhutan (4)Bolivia (2)Bosnia and Herzegovina (5)Botswana (2)Brazil (7)Brunei (1)Bulgaria (10)Burkina Faso (1)Cabo Verde (1)Cameroon (1)Canada (12)Central African Republic (1)Chile (5)China (10)Colombia (8)Costa Rica (5)Croatia (7)Cuba (4)Cyprus (6)Czechia (11)Democratic Republic of the Congo (2)Denmark (20)Djibouti (3)Dominican Republic (4)Ecuador (5)Egypt (3)El Salvador (1)Eritrea (2)Estonia (9)Ethiopia (1)Finland (9)France (17)Gambia (1)Georgia (4)Germany (10)Greece (7)Honduras (1)Hungary (7)Iceland (8)India (6)Indonesia (1)Iran (5)Iraq (2)Ireland (12)Israel (7)Italy (7)Japan (4)Jordan (1)Kazakhstan (4)Kenya (2)Kuwait (1)Kyrgyzstan (3)Latvia (4)Lebanon (1)Libya (1)Lithuania (5)Luxembourg (5)Madagascar (2)Malaysia (1)Malta (1)Mauritius (1)Moldova (3)Mongolia (4)Montenegro (2)Morocco (2)Myanmar (2)Nepal (2)Netherlands (6)New Zealand (2)Nigeria (5)North America (16)North Macedonia (1)Norway (14)Oman (1)Philippines (1)Poland (13)Portugal (3)Qatar (1)Romania (3)Russia (5)Saint Kitts and Nevis (1)Senegal (1)Serbia (4)Slovakia (2)Slovenia (3)South Africa (3)South Asia (14)South Korea (3)Spain (19)Sweden (13)Switzerland (10)Taiwan (3)Turkey (1)Ukraine (8)United Arab Emirates (9)United Kingdom (10)United States (12)Uzbekistan (1)Zambia (1)BrowseCompareSelect all 20Barnacle gooseBirds1 linkBlack swanBirds1 linkBrant (goose)Birds2 linksCanada gooseBirds2 linksCommon eiderBirds1 linkCommon pochardBirds2 linksCommon scoterBirds1 linkCommon shelduckBirdsEurasian tealBirds2 linksGreater scaupBirds2 linksGreylag GooseBirds2 linksLong-tailed duckBirds1 linkMallardBirds3 linksMute SwanBirds1 linkNorthern pintailBirds2 linksTaiga bean gooseBirds1 linkTufted duckBirds1 linkTundra swanBirds2 linksWhooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus)Birds1 linkWood Duck (Aix sponsa)Birds1 linkSources1.
