All Cichlid Genera

Cichlid genera are the genera of the family Cichlidae, which stands out as an extraordinary example of vertebrate evolution because of its intense speciation, with parenting among the most intensive in fishes. Cichlids are mainly found in lowland freshwater areas of tropical and subtropical regions, and the great majority live in the Great Lakes of East Africa, where between 800 and 2100 species are thought to exist. GBIF is led by Haplochromis with about 260 descendant taxa, Apistogramma with about 147, Crenicichla with about 137, Oreochromis with about 73 and Geophagus with about 69.
