The Atlantic hagfish is a jawless fish in the class Myxini, reaching about 0.75 meters in length, with no eyes or jaws and a star-shaped mouth ringed by six barbels. It has a single gill slit on each side and can release defensive slime through as many as 88 to 102 pores on its body. It lives on muddy ocean floors at depths of roughly 20 to 1,000 meters, in the eastern Atlantic from Portugal and the Mediterranean to the North Sea and Varanger Fjord, and in the western Atlantic from Baffin Island to North Carolina. It is rated least concern for conservation.
