Described by Natalia Chernova in 2001, it reaches a maximum length of about 4.8 centimeters and is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN. Its species name honors Karsten E. Hartel, a curatorial associate in ichthyology at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology.
