Schindleria brevipinguis

Schindleria brevipinguis, known as the stout infantfish, is a marine fish in the goby family Gobiidae, order Perciformes. It is found on Australia's Great Barrier Reef and at Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea; the first specimen was collected in 1979 by Jeff Leis, though the species was not formally described until 2004. It is exceptionally small, with males averaging 7.7 millimeters in standard length, a gravid female measured at 8.4 millimeters, and a maximum recorded length of about 10 millimeters, one specimen weighing only 0.7 milligrams. It once held the record for the smallest known vertebrate and remains among the smallest fish in the world, though other tiny organisms, including the frog Paedophryne amauensis and parasitic male anglerfish around 6.2 millimeters long, have since been recorded at similarly small sizes; its species name comes from Latin words meaning short and stout, describing its comparatively thick body relative to other Schindleria species.
