Pristiophorus nancyae

Pristiophorus nancyae, known as the African dwarf sawshark, is a species of sawshark in the family Pristiophoridae, order Pristiophoriformes. Like other sawsharks it has a long saw like snout, or rostrum, lined with pointed teeth used for both hunting and defense, and the rostrum makes up roughly a third of its slender body length. It lives on the continental shelf off the coast of Mozambique at depths of 286 to 500 meters, with unconfirmed records suggesting it may also occur near Somalia and Kenya. Scientists discovered the species in 2011 from a specimen caught off Mozambique at about 1,600 feet, and researchers at the Pacific Shark Research Center named it after Nancy Packard in recognition of her philanthropic support for ocean research; the IUCN has not yet formally evaluated the species, though it faces incidental capture in shrimping and bottom trawling and poses no danger to humans.
