The cartilaginous fish: fish whose skeleton is built from cartilage rather than bone, a trait shared with their evolutionary ancestors rather than a later simplification. Chondrichthyes includes sharks, rays, skates and the deep-sea chimaeras, and its members have existed largely unchanged in basic body plan for hundreds of millions of years.
