The bald cypress is a deciduous conifer in the family Cupressaceae, native to the southeastern United States from southeastern New Jersey south to Florida and west to central Texas and southeastern Oklahoma, and up the Mississippi River to southern Illinois and Indiana. It is known for the russet red autumn color of its lacy needles and is unusually tolerant of flooding, drought, and wet, salty or swampy soils. Louisiana named it the official state tree in 1963, and its rot-resistant mature wood has been used for fence posts, doors, flooring and caskets.
