Fouquieria columnaris

Flowering Plants

Fouquieria columnaris, known as the boojum tree or cirio, is a tree in the ocotillo family, whose other members include the ocotillos. Some taxonomists place it in the separate genus Idria. It grows almost exclusively on the Baja California Peninsula, with a small additional population in Sonora, Mexico. Its common name, boojum, comes from Godfrey Sykes of the Desert Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona, who took the name from a creature in a poem by Lewis Carroll.
