Yellow-eyed Penguin

Birds

The yellow-eyed penguin is a penguin species native to the South Island, Stewart Island, and outlying subantarctic islands of New Zealand, named for the pale yellow band of feathers that crosses its eyes and head. Unlike most penguins, it nests alone or in loosely spaced pairs in coastal forest and scrub rather than dense colonies, and pairs typically remain together for life. It is among the rarest penguin species, and its population has been affected by habitat loss, introduced predators, and fluctuating food supply. Adults feed primarily on bottom-dwelling fish such as red cod and opalfish, diving from the surface close to shore.
