The yellowfin tuna is a large, fast-swimming tuna species found in tropical and subtropical waters throughout the world's oceans, named for the long, bright yellow dorsal and anal fins that trail behind mature individuals and can extend far past the body in the largest specimens. It has a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body built for sustained high-speed swimming, with a dark metallic blue back fading to silver and yellow along the flanks and belly. A highly migratory predator, it travels in large schools, often alongside dolphins and other tuna species, and feeds on smaller fish, squid and crustaceans near the ocean surface as well as at depth. Yellowfin tuna are among the most commercially important fish species in the world, heavily targeted for sushi, sashimi and canned tuna markets, and some populations are also prized game fish capable of reaching weights over 180 kilograms. Fishing pressure varies significantly by region and stock, with some populations considered healthy while others show signs of overfishing, making the species a continued focus of international fisheries management.
