Home›Flowering Plants›Asters And Composites (Asterales)GroupAsters And Composites (Asterales)This group gathers Flowering Plants subcategory members belonging to the order Asterales, overwhelmingly the daisy or sunflower family Asteraceae (Compositae), the second-largest family of flowering plants, instantly recognizable by its composite flower head, a dense cluster of many small individual florets packed together and often ringed by larger, petal-like ray florets so the whole head reads to a pollinator as a single large flower. It spans garden favorites such as the sunflower, dandelion, chrysanthemum and daisy, aromatic and medicinal wormwoods and mugworts of the genus Artemisia, alpine specialists such as edelweiss and the Hawaiian silverswords, and everyday vegetables and weeds such as lettuce and burdock. The family's ecological success is closely tied to this flower-head strategy, which lets a plant offer a pollinator many small rewards in one visit rather than a single large one.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSeed-Bearing 2Browse ByAll Asters And Composites (Asterales)Asters And Composites (Asterales)33 entriesAsters And Composites (Asterales)Filter Results33 entriesCommon GroupAllAsters And Composites (Asterales) (33)TaxonomyAllAchillea (2)Asteraceae (24)Asterales (1)Bellis (2)Helianthus (2)Magnoliopsida (1)Taraxacum (1)HabitatAllAlpine (2)Chaparral (2)Grassland (12)Montane Grasslands and Shrublands (1)Salt Marsh (1)Steppe (2)Temperate Forest (1)Vernal Pool (1)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Least Concern (7)Not Evaluated (21)EcosystemAllHeath (1)Mediterranean Basin (1)Everyday GroupAllAsters And Composites (Asterales) (33)DietAllParasitic (1)Photosynthetic Autotroph (32)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Marine (2)Terrestrial (29)Terrestrial and Freshwater (1)Relationship to PeopleAllDomesticated (3)Farmed or Commercially Raised (3)Invasive or Introduced Species (8)Used in Traditional Medicine (16)Living or ExtinctAllYes (12)Where It LivesAllAfghanistan (11)Albania (20)Algeria (9)Andorra (2)Angola (1)Armenia (1)Australia (16)Austria (23)Azerbaijan (1)Bangladesh (3)Belarus (21)Belgium (22)Belize (3)Bolivia (12)Botswana (4)Brazil (2)Bulgaria (22)Cambodia (3)Cameroon (5)Canada (1)Chad (1)Colombia (14)Costa Rica (10)Croatia (2)Cuba (7)Cyprus (12)Denmark (21)Dominican Republic (8)East Africa (1)Eastern Europe (1)Ecuador (7)Egypt (5)El Salvador (7)Eritrea (4)Estonia (3)Eswatini (2)Ethiopia (5)Europe (3)Fiji (3)Finland (21)France (25)Georgia (12)Germany (24)Greece (19)Guatemala (7)Haiti (9)Honduras (9)Hungary (23)Iceland (14)India (13)Iran (16)Iraq (13)Ireland (21)Italy (22)Jamaica (3)Japan (10)Jordan (1)Kazakhstan (19)Laos (3)Latvia (2)Lesotho (5)Libya (8)Liechtenstein (2)Lithuania (1)Luxembourg (3)Maldives (1)Manchuria (7)Mauritania (1)Mauritius (5)Mexico (1)Moldova (2)Monaco (4)Mongolia (5)Montenegro (1)Morocco (9)Myanmar (5)Namibia (2)Nepal (7)Netherlands (20)Nicaragua (3)North America (22)Norway (17)Oman (1)Pakistan (9)Palestine (7)Panama (1)Paraguay (2)Poland (13)Portugal (10)Romania (10)San Marino (1)Saudi Arabia (3)Serbia (2)Siberia (2)Slovenia (2)South America (1)South Asia (1)Spain (12)Sri Lanka (1)Sweden (10)Switzerland (9)Taiwan (1)Thailand (1)The Mediterranean (1)Tunisia (4)Turkey (2)Turkmenistan (2)Ukraine (5)Uzbekistan (2)Vatican City (1)Venezuela (1)Vietnam (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 33Achillea millefoliumFlowering Plants2 linksAnthemis arvensisFlowering Plants1 linkArctium lappaFlowering Plants3 linksArctium minusFlowering Plants1 linkArtemisia absinthiumFlowering Plants1 linkArtemisia herba-albaFlowering Plants2 linksArtemisia maritimaFlowering Plants2 linksArtemisia vulgarisFlowering Plants1 linkBellis perennisFlowering Plants2 linksBidens cernuaFlowering Plants1 linkCampanula rotundifoliaFlowering Plants2 linksChocolate CosmosFlowering Plants1 linkChondrilla junceaFlowering Plants1 linkCirsium vulgareFlowering Plants1 linkCommon DaisyFlowering Plants2 linksCommon DandelionFlowering Plants2 linksCommon SunflowerFlowering Plants2 linksCommon YarrowFlowering Plants2 linksDowningia bacigalupiiFlowering Plants2 linksEdelweissFlowering Plants2 linksGarden Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium)Flowering Plants1 linkGarden Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)Flowering Plants1 linkGerman Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)Flowering Plants2 linksGlebionis segetumFlowering Plants2 linksHawaii SilverswordFlowering Plants3 linksHelichrysum arenariumFlowering Plants3 linksLettuceFlowering Plants1 linkLeucanthemum vulgareFlowering Plants2 linksOxeye DaisyFlowering Plants2 linksSilverswordFlowering Plants3 linksTansyFlowering Plants1 linkTussilago farfaraFlowering Plants1 linkWild SunflowerFlowering Plants2 linksSources1.
