Aleppo Pine

Aleppo Pine is a pine species native to the Mediterranean region, found from Morocco and Spain east through southern France, Italy, the Balkans, Turkey and the Levant. It is a drought tolerant, often twisted and low branching tree reaching 15 to 25 meters, well adapted to the hot dry summers and thin rocky soils typical of Mediterranean climates. The species is highly fire adapted, with cones that can remain closed on the tree for years before opening after fire or extreme heat, and it readily colonizes disturbed or burned ground. Aleppo Pine has long been used in reforestation programs across the Mediterranean basin and is a dominant component of many coastal pine forests in the region.
