Pinopsida is the taxonomic class of conifers, a group of vascular, cone bearing gymnosperm trees and shrubs making up the division Pinophyta. Conifers are mostly perennial, woody, evergreen plants with a regular branching pattern, reproducing through separate male and female cones usually borne on the same tree, and are wind pollinated with wind dispersed seeds. More than six hundred living species are known, and all extant conifers apart from the gnetophytes retain secondary woody growth.
