Umbrella pine, Sciadopitys verticillata, is a conifer native to Japan and the sole living species in the family Sciadopityaceae, a lineage with no other extant close relatives, sometimes described as a living fossil because of its long, largely unchanged fossil record. Its long, glossy, needle-like structures grow in dense whorls at the tips of branches, resembling the ribs of an umbrella, a distinctive feature that gives the species its common name.
