Austrian Pine, also called Black Pine, is a pine native to mountainous regions of southern and southeastern Europe and parts of Asia Minor, including Austria, the Balkans, Italy and Turkey. It is a robust, dark barked tree that can reach 30 to 40 meters in height, with dense, dark green needles and stout branches that give it a heavy, formal appearance. The species tolerates poor soils, wind and urban pollution better than many other pines, which has made it a widely planted ornamental and windbreak tree far outside its native range, including extensively in North America. Several geographically distinct subspecies are recognized across its range, differing in needle length and cone shape.
