Golden Larch is a deciduous conifer native to a limited area of eastern China, occurring naturally in mountain forests in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui. Although it resembles the true larches of genus Larix in its needle like leaves and deciduous habit, it is the sole species in its own genus and is not closely related to true larches. The tree is named for its foliage, which turns a striking golden yellow before dropping in autumn, and it bears distinctive rounded cones that break apart while still on the tree, similar to true firs. Golden Larch is cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks and botanical gardens in temperate regions worldwide for its autumn color and unusual, broadly pyramidal form.
