Pinus pseudostrobus

Pinus pseudostrobus, called the smooth-bark Mexican pine in English and chamite or pacingo in Spanish, is a conifer in the family Pinaceae native to forests of Mexico and Central America, from Sinaloa south through El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It grows 8 to 25 meters tall with a dense, rounded crown and brown, fissured bark that is smooth when young, occurring at elevations between 850 and 3,250 meters in regions with summer rainfall. It was described by John Lindley in 1839, has been introduced successfully to New Zealand near sea level, and in southern Nuevo Leon it is the tree with the largest volume per hectare in some forested areas. Logging and wood harvesting threaten its populations, though it receives ex situ conservation attention. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
