Gilled Mushrooms (Agarics)

This group gathers Fungi subcategory members that are gilled mushrooms in the broad, everyday sense, centered on the order Agaricales, fungi whose fruiting body has a cap held on a central stem with thin, blade-like gills radiating underneath it where spores are produced. It spans the fly agaric, one of the most recognizable mushrooms in the world for its red, white-spotted cap, the panther cap and other members of the genus Amanita, a genus containing both prized edibles and some of the deadliest poisonous mushrooms known, edible milkcaps such as the candy cap and the ugly milkcap, the common ink cap, notorious for a severe reaction when eaten alongside alcohol, and the chanterelle, gathered here as the closest common-shape fit even though its own order, Cantharellales, produces shallow ridges rather than true blade-like gills. Most members here form a symbiotic, mutually beneficial relationship with the roots of living trees, called mycorrhiza, trading soil nutrients and water for sugars the tree produces through photosynthesis.

They reproduce by both sexual and asexual means, and like basal plant groups (such as ferns and mosses) produce spores.
