Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast first isolated in 1923 from lychee and mangosteen fruit peels by French scientist Henri Boulard. It was originally described as a distinct species with its own taxonomic, metabolic and genetic characteristics, but subsequent genomic analysis has shown it is not a separate species, sharing more than 99 percent genomic sequence identity with strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and it is now often referred to as S. cerevisiae var. boulardii.
