Home›Birds›Birds Of Prey (Raptors)GroupBirds Of Prey (Raptors)This group gathers Birds subcategory members belonging to the diurnal birds of prey, a hooked-billed, sharp-taloned set of hunters traditionally split across the order Accipitriformes, the eagles, hawks, kites, harriers, buzzards and Old World vultures, and the order Falconiformes, the falcons, kestrels, hobbies and caracaras, together with the New World vultures and condors of the order Cathartiformes and the osprey and secretarybird, each the sole living member of its own family. It spans everything from the tiny Levant Sparrowhawk to the enormous Andean Condor, hunting live prey by sight and speed in most lineages while the vultures instead specialize in finding and consuming carrion, often locating a carcass from great height or, in the New World vultures' case, partly by smell. Despite the superficial resemblance shared by a hooked bill and broad soaring wings across all these groups, Old World and New World vultures are not close relatives, an example of convergent evolution toward the same scavenging lifestyle from two separate raptor lineages.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll Birds Of Prey (Raptors)Birds Of Prey (Raptors)40 entriesBirds Of Prey (Raptors)Filter Results40 entriesCommon GroupAllBirds Of Prey (Raptors) (40)TaxonomyAllAccipiter (11)Accipitridae (10)Accipitriformes (7)Aves (3)Cathartidae (1)Circus (4)Falconidae (3)Falconiformes (1)HabitatAllAlpine (1)Boreal Forest (3)Chaparral (4)Desert (4)Estuary (1)Freshwater Marsh (3)Grassland (10)Lake (3)Mangrove Forest (1)Riparian Zone (1)River (3)Savanna (3)Steppe (2)Temperate Coniferous Forest (1)Temperate Forest (5)Tropical Dry Forest (1)Tropical Rainforest (5)Tundra (4)Wetlands (5)Xeric Shrubland (1)Conservation StatusAllCritically Endangered (2)Endangered (2)Extinct (1)Least Concern (27)Near Threatened (2)Not Evaluated (1)Vulnerable (5)EcosystemAllAmazon Rainforest (2)Arctic Tundra (2)California Chaparral (1)Caspian Sea (1)Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (1)Danube Delta (2)Doñana (1)Great Plains (1)Heath (1)Kruger National Park (1)Lake Baikal (2)Moorland (2)Okavango Delta (1)Sahel (1)Sonoran Desert (1)Wadden Sea (1)Western Ghats (1)Yellowstone (2)Everyday GroupAllBirds Of Prey (Raptors) (40)DietAllCarnivore (31)Detritivore or Scavenger (7)Insectivore (1)Piscivore (1)Population TrendAllDecreasing (1)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (4)Marine (3)Marine and Freshwater (1)Terrestrial (31)Terrestrial and Marine (1)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (2)Disease Vector (1)Ecotourism and Research (2)Hunted or Fished (2)Invasive or Introduced Species (1)Kept as Pets (1)Natural Pest Control (6)Used in Traditional Medicine (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (38)Where It LivesAllAfrica (17)Argentina (2)Australasia (7)Australia (8)Belgium (19)Belize (2)Bolivia (2)Brazil (6)Colombia (10)Costa Rica (2)Cuba (1)Denmark (14)Djibouti (1)Dominica (1)Dominican Republic (1)Ecuador (9)El Salvador (2)Eritrea (1)Estonia (1)Finland (1)France (3)Georgia (1)Germany (1)Guatemala (2)Guyana (2)Haiti (1)Honduras (3)Kenya (1)Latvia (1)Luxembourg (6)Mauritius (1)Mexico (2)Mozambique (1)Netherlands (5)Nicaragua (3)North America (15)Norway (39)Panama (3)Paraguay (2)Peru (2)Poland (4)Portugal (1)Russia (9)South Africa (1)South America (7)South Asia (15)Spain (13)Suriname (1)Sweden (13)Taiwan (10)Tanzania (1)Ukraine (14)United Kingdom (6)United States (7)Uruguay (1)Venezuela (7)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 40African marsh harrierBirds3 linksAndean CondorBirds2 linksArcher's buzzardBirds3 linksBald EagleBirds13 linksBlack-winged kiteBirds3 linksCalifornia CondorBirds5 linksChangeable hawk-eagleBirds2 linksChilean hawkBirds2 linksCollared SparrowhawkBirds1 linkCommon BuzzardBirds1 linkCommon Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)Birds3 linksEurasian hobbyBirds1 linkEurasian sparrowhawkBirds2 linksFrances's SparrowhawkBirds1 linkGolden EagleBirds4 linksGriffon VultureBirds2 linksGundlach's hawkBirds2 linksHarpy EagleBirds4 linksHen harrierBirds3 linksKing VultureBirds3 linksLevant SparrowhawkBirds1 linkMoluccan goshawkBirds1 linkMontagu's harrierBirds5 linksNew Britain sparrowhawkBirds1 linkOspreyBirds5 linksPeregrine FalconBirds6 linksPhilippine EagleBirds2 linksRed Kite (Milvus milvus)Birds3 linksRed-tailed HawkBirds6 linksRed-thighed sparrowhawkBirds1 linkRough-legged buzzardBirds8 linksRufous-necked sparrowhawkBirds2 linksSecretarybirdBirds3 linksSlaty-mantled goshawkBirds2 linksSteller's Sea EagleBirds2 linksTurkey VultureBirds4 linksWestern marsh harrierBirds6 linksWhite-bellied goshawkBirds2 linksWhite-tailed eagleBirds6 linksYellow-headed caracaraBirds2 linksSources1.
