Home›Birds›CuckoosGroupCuckoosThis group gathers Birds subcategory members belonging to the order Cuculiformes, the cuckoos, a family whose best-known members are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other bird species and leaving the host parents to raise the cuckoo chick, often at the expense of the host's own young. Not every member of this order shares that habit: it also spans the roadrunners, fast, largely ground-dwelling hunters of the arid Americas capable of running down snakes and lizards, and the malkohas and coucals, more typical forest and scrub cuckoos that build and tend their own nests like most other birds. Members of this group are found on every continent except Antarctica, with the greatest diversity concentrated in the tropics of Africa, Asia and the Americas.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll CuckoosCuckoos8 entriesCuckoosFilter Results8 entriesCommon GroupAllCuckoos (8)TaxonomyAllAves (2)Cuculiformes (6)HabitatAllChaparral (1)Grassland (1)Mangrove Forest (1)Savanna (1)Tropical Dry Forest (1)Tropical Rainforest (1)Wetlands (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (8)EcosystemAllChihuahuan Desert (1)Everyday GroupAllCuckoos (8)DietAllCarnivore (3)Insectivore (3)Parasitic (1)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (5)Relationship to PeopleAllNatural Pest Control (3)Living or ExtinctAllYes (8)Where It LivesAllAfrica (3)Antigua and Barbuda (2)Australia (1)Bahamas (2)Barbados (2)Belgium (1)Belize (2)Bolivia (1)Brazil (3)Canada (1)Colombia (2)Cuba (2)Denmark (2)Dominica (2)Dominican Republic (2)Ecuador (1)El Salvador (2)Grenada (2)Guatemala (2)Guyana (1)Haiti (2)Honduras (2)Jamaica (2)Luxembourg (1)Mexico (2)Nicaragua (2)North America (5)Norway (8)Panama (2)Paraguay (1)Peru (1)Russia (1)Saint Kitts and Nevis (2)Saint Lucia (2)Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (2)Seychelles (1)South America (1)South Asia (2)Spain (1)Suriname (2)Sweden (1)Tanzania (1)Trinidad and Tobago (2)Ukraine (1)United States (2)Venezuela (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 8African emerald cuckooBirds1 linkBlack-billed cuckooBirds2 linksCommon CuckooBirds4 linksGreater RoadrunnerBirds3 linksMangrove cuckooBirds2 linksPuerto Rican lizard cuckooBirds1 linkRed-billed malkohaBirds2 linksThick-billed cuckooBirds1 linkSources1.
