Home›Conifers and Other Gymnosperms›Cycads (Cycadales)GroupCycads (Cycadales)This group gathers Conifers and Other Gymnosperms subcategory members belonging to the order Cycadales, an ancient lineage of seed plants that, despite a superficial resemblance to palms or ferns, is only distantly related to either and belongs instead among the gymnosperms alongside the true conifers. It spans the genus Encephalartos, Africa's largest and most diverse cycad genus, several of its species now critically endangered in the wild through overcollection, the genus Cycas, including the sago palm long cultivated as an ornamental despite its common name, the genus Dioon, native to Mexico and Central America, and Zamia, whose starchy underground stem, coontie, was historically processed as a food source by indigenous peoples of Florida and the Caribbean despite the toxic compounds the raw plant contains. Nearly every cycad reproduces via large, distinctive cones and a sluggish growth rate measured in decades.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSeed-Bearing 2Browse ByAll Cycads (Cycadales)Cycads (Cycadales)11 entriesCycads (Cycadales)Filter Results11 entriesCommon GroupAllCycads (Cycadales) (11)TaxonomyAllCycadopsida (4)Encephalartos (5)Plantae (2)HabitatAllGrassland (1)Tropical Dry Forest (1)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Extinct in the Wild (1)Least Concern (1)Near Threatened (2)Vulnerable (3)EcosystemAllDaintree Rainforest (1)Everglades (1)Everyday GroupAllCycads (Cycadales) (11)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (11)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (10)Relationship to PeopleAllEaten or Drunk by People (3)Farmed or Commercially Raised (1)Used in Traditional Medicine (6)Living or ExtinctAllNo (1)Yes (10)Where It LivesAllAfrica (4)Bahamas (1)Bangladesh (1)Brazil (3)Burkina Faso (1)Colombia (1)Cuba (1)Cyprus (1)Democratic Republic of the Congo (1)Gabon (1)Georgia (1)India (1)Iran (1)Japan (1)Libya (1)Marshall Islands (1)Mexico (1)Mozambique (1)North America (1)Norway (2)Seychelles (1)South Africa (5)South Asia (1)Taiwan (1)United States (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 11Breadtree CycadConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkChestnut DioonConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkCoontieConifers and Other Gymnosperms3 linksCycadConifers and Other Gymnosperms2 linksEastern Cape Giant CycadConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkEncephalartos altensteiniiConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkEncephalartos FeroxConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkNatal Grass CycadConifers and Other Gymnosperms2 linksQueen SagoConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkSago PalmConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkWood's CycadConifers and Other Gymnosperms1 linkSources1.
