Home›Sponges›Demosponges (Demospongiae)GroupDemosponges (Demospongiae)Demosponges are the sponges of the class Demospongiae, the largest class of sponges, whose skeletons are made of spongin fibres, siliceous spicules or both. They include the barrel sponges of Caribbean reefs and the carnivorous deep-sea sponges that trap small animals on hooked spicules instead of filtering particles from the water. Glass sponges, whose skeletons are six-rayed silica spicules, are a separate class and have their own group.Browse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)Browse ByAll Demosponges (Demospongiae)Demosponges (Demospongiae)2 entriesDemosponges (Demospongiae)Filter Results2 entriesCommon GroupAllDemosponges (Demospongiae) (2)TaxonomyAllDemospongiae (2)HabitatAllCoral Reef (1)Marine (1)Conservation StatusAllNot Evaluated (2)EcosystemAllCoral Reef Systems (1)Everyday GroupAllDemosponges (Demospongiae) (2)DietAllCarnivore (1)Filter Feeder (1)System (Realm)AllMarine (2)Relationship to PeopleAllEcotourism and Research (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (1)Where It LivesAllBahamas (1)The Pacific Ocean (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 2Chondrocladia lyraSponges2 linksGiant Barrel Sponge (Xestospongia muta)Sponges3 linksSourcesGBIF: Chondrocladia lyra Lee, Reiswig, Austin & Lundsten, 2012GBIFHas Member: Chondrocladia lyra, Species recordQuote, Has Member: Chondrocladia lyra, Species recordclass: DemospongiaeView the SourceGBIF: Xestospongia muta (Schmidt, 1870)GBIFHas Member: Giant Barrel Sponge (Xestospongia muta), Species recordQuote, Has Member: Giant Barrel Sponge (Xestospongia muta), Species recordclass: DemospongiaeView the SourceComments (0)No comments yet.
