Devonian Problematic Fossil Genera is a Browse By group of the Nature Atlas that gathers genera of fossils from the Devonian period whose placement among living groups is disputed, such as Rhyniognatha, an arthropod once read as the oldest insect, and Protonympha, a form genus compared with Ediacaran fossils. An entry belongs here when its own cited article states that the fossil is of Devonian age and of disputed or problematic placement. It excludes fossils from other periods. The group collects fossils whose true relatives remain unsettled, so that a reader can compare how scientists have argued over whether they are early insects, relatives of Ediacaran organisms or something else.

Rhyniognatha is an extinct genus of arthropod of disputed placement. It has been considered in some analyses as the oldest insect known, as well as possibly being a flying insect. Rhyniognatha is known from a partial head with preserved mouthparts from the Early Devonian aged Rhynie chert around 400 million years ago, when Earth’s first terrestrial ecosystems were being formed.
