Home›Birds›ParrotsGroupParrotsThis group gathers Birds subcategory members belonging to the order Psittaciformes, defined by a strongly curved, hooked upper bill and feet with two toes pointing forward and two back, an arrangement called zygodactyl that gives parrots an unusually dexterous grip for climbing and for manipulating food or objects with one foot while balancing on the other. It spans the large macaws and the crested cockatoos, the small, often gregarious budgerigar and its lovebird and conure relatives, and two notable New Zealand outliers, the kea, an alpine parrot known for its curiosity and problem-solving, and the flightless, nocturnal, critically endangered kakapo, the heaviest living parrot species. Parrots are widely regarded, alongside the crow family among the passerines, as among the most intelligent birds, with several species capable of vocal mimicry, tool use and social learning documented in controlled study.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll ParrotsParrots11 entriesParrotsFilter Results11 entriesCommon GroupAllParrots (11)TaxonomyAllCacatuidae (1)Psittacidae (3)Psittaciformes (7)HabitatAllAlpine (1)Grassland (1)Savanna (2)Temperate Rainforest (1)Tropical Rainforest (4)Xeric Shrubland (1)Conservation StatusAllCritically Endangered (1)Endangered (2)Extinct (1)Least Concern (4)Near Threatened (1)Vulnerable (2)EcosystemAllAmazon Rainforest (1)Cerrado (1)Fiordland (1)Pantanal (1)Everyday GroupAllParrots (11)DietAllFrugivore (2)Herbivore (7)Omnivore (1)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (10)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (2)Hunted or Fished (3)Kept as Pets (5)Living or ExtinctAllNo (1)Yes (10)Where It LivesAllAfrica (2)Australasia (6)Australia (6)Belgium (4)Benin (1)Bolivia (1)Brazil (2)Colombia (4)Cyprus (1)Denmark (1)Ecuador (2)Federated States of Micronesia (1)France (2)Greece (1)Indonesia (1)Italy (2)Japan (1)Maldives (2)Mauritius (2)Namibia (1)Netherlands (5)New Zealand (2)North America (1)Norway (9)Paraguay (1)Peru (1)Poland (1)Romania (1)Slovenia (1)South America (2)Spain (1)Taiwan (2)Ukraine (1)United Arab Emirates (4)United Kingdom (4)United States (1)Venezuela (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 11African Grey ParrotBirds2 linksAustralian king parrotBirds2 linksBroad-billed parrotBirds1 linkBudgerigarBirds3 linksHyacinth MacawBirds4 linksKakapoBirds2 linksKea (Nestor notabilis)Birds2 linksPalm CockatooBirds2 linksPesquet's parrotBirds2 linksScarlet MacawBirds3 linksSulphur-Crested CockatooBirds2 linksSources1.
