Home›Birds›Pigeons And DovesGroupPigeons And DovesThis group gathers Birds subcategory members belonging to the order Columbiformes, the pigeons and doves, together with the sandgrouse, a small group of birds classified in their own order but close enough relatives to sit naturally alongside pigeons rather than in this subcategory's general catch-all group. Pigeons and doves are stout-bodied, small-headed seed and fruit eaters found nearly worldwide, unusual among birds for producing a nutrient-rich secretion in the crop, colloquially called crop milk, that both parents feed to their young in the first days after hatching. This group spans familiar urban and farmland species such as the rock pigeon, the ancestor of the domestic and feral pigeons found in cities worldwide, and the mourning dove, through to more striking tropical forms such as the large, crested Victoria crowned pigeon of New Guinea.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll Pigeons And DovesPigeons And Doves11 entriesPigeons And DovesFilter Results11 entriesCommon GroupAllPigeons And Doves (11)TaxonomyAllColumbidae (8)Columbiformes (2)Pterocliformes (1)HabitatAllChaparral (2)Desert (3)Freshwater Swamp Forest (1)Grassland (1)Mangrove Forest (1)Riparian Zone (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (9)Near Threatened (1)EcosystemAllSahara Desert (1)Everyday GroupAllPigeons And Doves (11)DietAllHerbivore (11)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Terrestrial (10)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (1)Domesticated (2)Hunted or Fished (2)Invasive or Introduced Species (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (11)Where It LivesAllAfghanistan (1)Africa (6)Albania (1)Andorra (1)Angola (1)Antigua and Barbuda (1)Argentina (1)Armenia (1)Australasia (1)Australia (4)Austria (1)Azerbaijan (1)Bahamas (1)Bahrain (1)Bangladesh (1)Barbados (1)Belarus (1)Belgium (4)Belize (1)Benin (1)Bhutan (1)Bolivia (1)Bosnia and Herzegovina (1)Botswana (1)Brazil (1)Brunei (1)Bulgaria (1)Burkina Faso (1)Burundi (1)Canada (1)Colombia (1)Denmark (3)Liechtenstein (1)Luxembourg (1)Mauritius (1)North America (3)Norway (8)Russia (1)South Africa (1)South Asia (6)Spain (2)Sweden (2)Ukraine (2)United Arab Emirates (1)United States (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 11Adamawa Turtle DoveBirds1 linkCommon wood pigeonBirds1 linkDomestic PigeonBirds3 linksMourning Collared DoveBirds2 linksMourning DoveBirds2 linksRock PigeonBirds4 linksRuddy cuckoo-doveBirds1 linkSpotted doveBirds2 linksSpotted sandgrouseBirds2 linksStock doveBirds1 linkVictoria Crowned PigeonBirds2 linksSources1.
