Prokaryote Kingdoms

Prokaryote kingdoms are the rank between domain and phylum that was validly named for bacteria and archaea in 2024 under the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes. The paper that did it, Goker and Oren in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, was titled Valid publication of names of two domains and seven kingdoms of prokaryotes. Kingdoms inside the domain Archaea include Methanobacteriati, Thermoproteati and Promethearchaeati, and each name ends in the suffix ati, which denotes a kingdom, added to the name of a type genus such as Methanobacterium or Thermoproteus.
