Home›Mosses and Liverworts›Thalloid LiverwortsGroupThalloid LiverwortsThis group gathers Mosses and Liverworts subcategory members belonging to the thalloid, or thallose, liverworts, a growth form found chiefly within the class Marchantiopsida in which the plant body forms a flat, ribbon-like or lobed structure called a thallus, entirely lacking the stems and separate leaves that both true mosses and the leafy liverworts gathered separately possess. It spans the genus Riccia, whose species include both fully terrestrial forms that grow pressed flat against damp soil and the floating crystalwort, an aquatic species popular among freshwater aquarium hobbyists, the great scented liverwort of the genus Conocephalum, notable for a strong, distinctive scent when its thallus is crushed or damaged, and the crescent-cup liverwort of the genus Lunularia, named for the small, crescent-shaped cups on its thallus surface that hold asexual reproductive structures called gemmae. Nearly every thalloid liverwort gathered here reproduces both sexually, through spores, and asexually, through gemmae or simple fragmentation of the thallus itself, giving the group two largely independent routes to spreading into new ground.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSpores 2Browse ByAll Thalloid LiverwortsThalloid Liverworts12 entriesThalloid LiverwortsFilter Results12 entriesCommon GroupAllThalloid Liverworts (12)TaxonomyAllAmaranthaceae (1)Marchantiophyta (4)Marchantiopsida (2)Plantae (5)HabitatAllFreshwater Marsh (2)River (2)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (1)Not Evaluated (8)EcosystemAllMediterranean Basin (1)Everyday GroupAllThalloid Liverworts (12)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (12)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (2)Terrestrial (7)Relationship to PeopleAllInvasive or Introduced Species (1)Kept as Pets (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (5)Where It LivesAllAfrica (6)Asia (2)Australia (1)Australia (7)Austria (1)Belgium (7)Brazil (2)Canada (1)Chile (4)Colombia (4)Czechia (2)Denmark (6)Finland (1)France (1)Germany (2)Hungary (1)Iceland (1)Japan (1)Latvia (1)Luxembourg (7)Netherlands (2)New Zealand (1)North America (9)Norway (7)Poland (1)Portugal (6)Russia (1)Serbia (1)Slovakia (1)South Africa (3)South America (7)South Asia (8)Spain (2)Sweden (8)Taiwan (8)United Kingdom (1)United States (7)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 12Common LiverwortMosses and Liverworts2 linksCrescent-cup LiverwortMosses and Liverworts2 linksCrystalwortMosses and Liverworts1 linkFat FeatherwortMosses and Liverworts1 linkFloating CrystalwortMosses and Liverworts1 linkForked VeilwortMosses and Liverworts1 linkGreat Scented LiverwortMosses and Liverworts1 linkMarchantiaMosses and Liverworts2 linksOverleaf PelliaMosses and Liverworts2 linksPellia EpiphyllaMosses and Liverworts2 linksPurple-fringed RicciaMosses and Liverworts1 linkSlender RicciaMosses and Liverworts1 linkSources1.
