Saturniidae

Saturniidae, commonly called saturniids, is a family of moths comprising roughly 2,300 described species, including the emperor moths, royal moths and giant silk moths. Members are large bodied, with broad, lobed wings covered in hair-like scales, reduced mouthparts, and no frenulum, instead relying on overlapping hindwings for continuous wing surface; many species show bright coloration with translucent eyespots or windows in the wings, and males typically have larger, more feathered antennae than females. Most species have wingspans between roughly one and six inches, though tropical species such as the Atlas moth can reach about twelve inches, and together with certain Noctuidae, Saturniidae includes some of the largest Lepidoptera and among the largest living insects.
