Six-eyed Sand Spider

Arachnids

The six-eyed sand spider, genus Hexophthalma, is a group of spiders found in the arid deserts of southern Africa, named for its unusual arrangement of six eyes in three widely spaced pairs. It spends most of its time buried and motionless just beneath the sand surface, ambushing passing prey, and its venom is considered among the most dangerous of any spider, containing tissue-destroying compounds similar to those of its relative the brown recluse, though bites on humans are exceptionally rare given how reclusive and remote the species is.
